    History

The G36C is a 5.56×45mm subcarbine variant of the G36K, developed and produced by Heckler & Koch in Germany in 2001. The original G36 rifle was designed as a replacement for the heavier 7.62mm G3 battle rifle.

Like all G36 variants, the G36C has a conventional layout and a modular component design. It is gas-operated, fires from a closed rotary bolt, and feeds from a 30-round detachable box magazine or 100-round C-Mag drum magazine. It employs a free-floating, cold hammer forged & chrome-lined barrel that is assembled with the gas block and a four-prong open-type flash hider.

In its original development, the extremely short barrel of the G36C forced designers to move the gas block closer to the muzzle end and reduce the length of the gas piston operating rod. The handguard and stock were also shortened and the fixed carry handle of the previous G36 variants was replaced with a carrying handle with an integrated MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail. The dual optical sight found on the standard G36 and G36K models was replaced with a set of rail-mounted detachable iron sights that consist of a semi-shrouded front post and a flip-up rear sight with two apertures of different diameter. The short handguard has four accessory attachment points, one of which could be used for a vertical grip.

    Features

    • Ambidextrous Fire & Safety Selector — The fire and safety selector has controls on both sides of the receiver to increase maneuverability and the operators options of fire (a holdover from the original G3 rifle selector).
    • Side-folding Stock — Because the weapon can still be fired when the stock is folded to one side, the shortened overall length of the weapon better facilitates use in close quarters and vehicles.
    • Operating mechanism — Unlike direct impingement, the short-stroke piston system of the G36 takes gas trailing the bullet to operate a piston instead of pushing directly on the bolt. The G36C's bolt is operated by a cam that guides the bolt carrier by its respective cutout, then when fully pushed forward, seven radial locking lugs fully enclose the chamber.
